About
The Ultra-Trail Jack Rabbit (UTJR) is a unique endurance event held annually in Val-Morin, Quebec, celebrating both trail running and cross-country skiing. Established to honor the legacy of Herman Smith-Johannsen, affectionately known as "Jackrabbit," a pioneer of Nordic skiing in the Laurentians, the event offers a memorable nighttime racing experience. The 2026 edition is scheduled for Friday, February 20, and marks the fourth year of this growing tradition.
Participants can choose between 4-hour, 8-hour, or 12-hour events in either trail running or cross-country skiing, all set on illuminated loops through the scenic Parc Régional de Val-David/Val-Morin. The event is as much about community and camaraderie as it is about endurance, with a strong charitable component supporting local youth sports and Centraide des Laurentides. Post-race festivities at the chalet Far Hills, complete with hot meals and local craft beers, further enhance the festive and communal atmosphere.
Course
The UTJR course consists of two main loops: a 4.5 km trail running loop and a 5.3 km cross-country ski loop, both set within the Parc Régional de Val-David/Val-Morin. The terrain is natural and varied, featuring forested paths, rolling hills, and occasional technical sections typical of the Laurentians. While specific elevation profiles are not published, the park's landscape ensures a mix of climbs and descents suitable for endurance athletes. The entire course is illuminated with torches, enhancing visibility and creating a magical nighttime racing environment. Snow conditions can vary, adding an extra layer of challenge and excitement for participants.
